The essentials
The Department of Conservation says the townships of Franz Josef/Waiau and Fox Glacier/Weheka are on the park boundary and offer accommodation, service stations, grocery stores and souvenir shops.6 That sums up the village well: a short main road, a handful of businesses, and a national park starting at the edge of the last paddock.
The operator's base is on that road, and the operator says its small town keeps most accommodation within walking distance of the building in the middle of the township.7 All of its trips depart from the building on the Main Road, with a large car park to the north.8,9 So if you sleep in the village, your morning is a short stroll and a line at the desk, not a drive and a parking hunt.
The things to do in Fox Glacier are mostly outdoors, and the village is the place from which you reach them. Lake Matheson is a five minute drive west, and the walk around the lake takes approximately one hour.10 Gillespies Beach is a further 20 minutes beyond it.11 The map above pins the base, the fuel stop, a cafe and a hotel, plus the viewpoints on both sides.

Hours are the Glacier Country and operator figures and can change in winter; the fuel station's summer and winter hours differ.1
Glacier Country gives the road distances plainly. Fox Glacier to Franz Josef Glacier is 24 minutes driving, 24 km,5 and Fox Glacier to Wanaka is 3 hours 14 minutes, 262 km.17 From Hokitika the village is 158 km and 2 hours by car on State Highway 6.18 The closest airports to the region are Hokitika, Queenstown and Christchurch.19
Without a car there are buses. The InterCity bus from Franz Josef to Fox Glacier takes about 35 minutes, and the bus from Queenstown takes about 7 hours 15 minutes.20,21 Those are the operator's published figures for its transport page, so check timetables before you plan a day around them.
The tour of this site starts in the village, which is the real reason to base yourself here. It lasts 4 hours for a group of up to 11, and lists from $501 with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. A night in the village the evening before turns an early flight into a walk, and leaves a spare morning if the weather sends you back to the start.
Fox Glacier Motors at 52 Main Road is open 8am to 7pm in summer and 8am to 6pm in winter, seven days a week, with 24-hour fuel available year round.1 It also has an On the Spot convenience store stocked with food and drinks.22 The Fox Glacier Store at 40 Main Road is open 8am to 8pm, 7 days per week.2 Fill the tank here if you are heading on to Wanaka or Queenstown.
Cash needs planning. The Glacier Country visitor guide lists an ATM in Franz Josef, outside the West Coast Wildlife Centre, and says Eftpos and credit cards are accepted for most services.3,34 Do not assume a cash machine in the village. A phone signal is not a worry: there is mobile coverage for all the major providers in the villages of Franz Josef and Fox Glacier.4
For help, the Department of Conservation office at Fox Glacier is not open to the public, and enquiries go to the Westland Tai Poutini National Park Visitor Centre in Franz Josef.23 A health clinic stands on the Main Road in the village, according to Glacier Country.24 Toilets are available in the village centre.35

Pick my bedGlacier Country says the villages of Franz Josef and Fox Glacier both offer everything from simple takeaways to five star dining.33 In Fox Glacier itself the choice is smaller, but sound. Cafe Neve is on the main street of the village,16 and the Matheson Cafe, by the lake, is described as a breakfast, lunch or dinner stop not to miss.39
Ask for restaurants in Fox Glacier and the honest reply is that the choice is small, so plan meals as you would in any village. The fuel station sells food and drinks,22 and the Fox Glacier Store is open until 8pm,2 which covers a late arrival after a long drive. Book a table on the day of your flight if you want to celebrate after it.
Glacier Country describes winter as snow-capped peaks, mirror-like reflections, calm settled weather and fewer people.41 Fewer people can mean quieter tables, so ask the host which nights the kitchen is open. The guiding operator also keeps gift shops in Fox Glacier and Franz Josef, open 7 days a week, for a souvenir on the way out.25

The operator lists hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts and home stays, backpackers, campervan parks and motor camps in the village.42 Lake Matheson Motels is just 400 metres from the heart of the township and offers studio units and family accommodation.26 Sunset Motel sits on farmland a short stroll from the village, and all 25 units have glass frontages facing Mount Cook and Mount Tasman.27
For history, the Heartland Hotel Fox Glacier originally opened in 1928 and was restored in 2007.28 The Glacier Country site places the Heartland Hotel Glacier Country in the village, just three kilometres from the glacier car park.29 Backpackers are served by Ivory Towers, which sits in the heart of the township.43 Where to stay in Fox Glacier is mostly a question of budget and view.
Campers can look further out. The Gillespies Beach Campsite is 21 km from Fox Glacier on a narrow, unsealed road that is not suitable for long vehicles.30 Campervans are better placed in the village parks. Book early for the summer months, and keep the guiding base within a short walk so that a morning of low cloud never turns into a missed flight.

Franz and Fox Glacier villages both have a vibrant hospitality scene providing visitors with everything from simple takeaways to world-class five star dining.
Before you arrive
Evenings are for short walks. A rainforest stream walk near the village is a 1.2km loop of 20 minutes, with glow worms at night, so bring a torch.12 The Lake Matheson circuit takes approximately one hour, and the first section to the jetty is 40 minutes return.10,15 In winter, Gillespies Beach gathers up to 1500 seals.31
If the helicopter cannot fly, the operator lists wet-weather alternatives. A walk or cycle from the township reaches a viewpoint of the largest active landslide in New Zealand, 5km return and 1 hr 20 min.32 The Fox River walkway follows the river through ancient podocarp rainforest, 6.4km return, an easy to intermediate walk of 2 hours.44 Both start from the village.
On the morning itself, plan to check in 20 minutes early, and allow for a decision on the weather 10 minutes before departure.13,14 The operator advises booking for your first day in the village, since flights depend on the weather.14 That way a grounded morning leaves you a second day in hand, and the village has plenty to fill the gap.
