It offers up to 2.5 hours of hiking on the Franz Josef Glacier from the village of Franz Josef.
The two glaciers are 21 to 24 km apart and both sell a helicopter flight onto the ice and a guided walk. Here is where hours, rules, slots and prices differ, so you can pick one.

The essentials
Choosing between a Fox Glacier heli hike and a Franz Josef heli hike is easier than it looks, because the two products are close cousins. Each takes you by helicopter onto the ice, fits you with crampons and leads you across it with a guide.9,10 Each lasts up to 4 hours in total, and each departs from a base in its own village.1,2 Both use helicopters to reach a landing site, and both lend you the gear you need for the ice, which is why the hike itself feels so similar from one valley to the other.11,12
The villages are close. The Fox operator gives the distance between Fox Glacier and Franz Josef as 21 km, or 30 minutes by road, while Glacier Country gives 24 km and 24 minutes, which means either way you can stay in one village and drive to the other for a trip.13,14 The decision is therefore less about geography than about what each hike offers, what each asks of you and which slot suits your day, and the sections below take those three in turn before the prices.
One caution for this comparison: operators describe their own product in their own words. Franz Josef Glacier Guides call their glacier the fastest moving commercially guided glacier in the world, and Fox Glacier Guiding calls Fox the West Coast's largest glacier.15,16 Both are statements from the seller, so this page reports them as claims and compares the numbers that can be checked: hours, ages, weights, group minimums and prices. Where a sentence below says an operator describes something, that is the operator's wording and not our verdict.

Prices are from prices on a Viator listing for Fox and a GetYourGuide listing for Franz Josef, so the platforms differ and the fare on your date can differ too.
In a Fox Glacier vs Franz Josef heli hike comparison the headline numbers are close. The Fox operator's page for its trip of up to 4 hours gives up to 3 hours on the ice, weather permitting.1,18 Franz Josef Glacier Guides give up to 2.5 hours on the ice and up to 4 hours from check-in to the end of the trip.2 On paper, Fox gives you up to half an hour longer on the ice, and the difference between a maximum and what you get on the day is set by the weather and by your guide. Neither figure is a promise, so treat half an hour as a tiebreaker and not as the reason to choose.
Reviews and listings agree on the shape of the Fox day. The GetYourGuide itinerary for a Fox heli hike lists a 30 minute safety briefing, a 5 minute flight, 3 hours of hiking, sightseeing and photo stops, a 5 minute flight back and a 10 minute break. Franz Josef's listing gives a duration label of 4 to 8 hours and up to 2.5 hours of hiking, so read its dates and times before you assume it matches. The label covers more than one version of the day, which is why the listing page matters more than its headline.
Check-in differs slightly. The Fox operator asks guests to check in 20 minutes before, and Franz Josef Glacier Guides ask for 15 minutes before in summer.1,17 In both cases the check-in time comes before the briefing and the fitting of gear, so a late arrival can cost you the slot. Plan your breakfast and your parking to suit the earlier check-in, and write both times in your phone before the day.
Reviews on file
These are review counts on the listings named here, on two different platforms, so they show how much feedback exists and not which hike is better.
The operators describe different landing zones. Fox Glacier Guiding describes a flight over the pinnacles of the lower icefall and a landing at a remote part of the glacier with a view of Victoria Falls, where it says forces work hardest and often create ice caves and arches.25,26,27 Franz Josef Glacier Guides say guests land high up on the main ice fall, and describe a hike through blue ice features.28,10
The glaciers have different characters, according to the people who fly over them. Glacier Helicopters say the Franz Josef glacier is steeper than the Fox glacier, so some see it as more dramatic, and that it finishes 19km from the coast.24 The same company says the Fox ice flows at up to 3 metres per day in places and sits unusually close to both an ocean and a rain forest.29 Those are descriptions from the helicopter side of the business, and they are useful for the picture they paint of two very different ice streams.
Neither operator promises a particular feature. Fox says that ice features change constantly and that nobody can promise a given feature will be there on the day.18 Franz Josef Glacier Guides say they have exclusive landing access to their glacier for the heli hike, which is a statement about their own access and not about the quality of the day.30 Pick on the numbers, and take the rest as colour, because a bigger adjective does not give you more ice.

If you have time
See this optionAge limits are almost the same. The Fox heli hike sets a minimum age of 9, with children aged 9-16 accompanied by an adult, and the Franz Josef heli hike sets 10.3,4 Franz Josef Glacier Guides add that children must weigh at least 35kg and be at least 137cm tall, which makes their rule the stricter one for a small child.23 The Fox operator gives no weight or height floor on its heli hike page, so ask it directly if your child is small for their age.1
Weight limits are close as well. Fox Glacier Guiding sets an individual limit of 116kg on every experience that uses a helicopter, and Franz Josef Glacier Guides set 115kg for their heli hike, because of the rescue equipment required on the ice.19,20 A single kilogram divides them, so a guest near that figure should ask both operators before paying, and should do so in writing so that the answer is on file when the booking is made.
Fitness is described in two ways with a similar result. Fox defines moderate fitness as ascending and descending 500-800m over 4-6 hours with a light pack, and Franz Josef defines it as being comfortable walking for 2-3 hours on uneven terrain, including steps cut into the ice.34,35 Franz Josef also asks guests to declare knee, back, heart, blood pressure, diabetes and asthma conditions when booking, and Fox expects guests to tell its staff about conditions and medication too.36,37

Group size is where the two listings differ on paper. Our Fox listing is for a group of up to 11 with a live guide who speaks English, and Franz Josef Glacier Guides give a guide to guest ratio of 1 guide to 11 guests.2 The two are the same number reached in two ways, so do not expect a big difference in how crowded the ice feels, although a group that is not full will feel quieter than one that is.
Minimums differ. A Fox trip needs 3 people to go ahead, and the operator tries to place a smaller party on a trip with other people.5 Franz Josef Glacier Guides generally need a minimum of 4 guests and suggest contacting them 48 hours ahead to check that it has been met.6 In a quiet season, a trip at either glacier may therefore not run, so ask the operator early, and have a second date in mind that you could move to without wrecking your route.
Slots differ too. The Fox operator departs at 8:50am and 11:50am year round, with extra departures on demand.1 In summer Franz Josef Glacier Guides depart at 7:30am, 10:00am and 12:30pm.17 If you want the earliest possible slot, Franz Josef starts first, and if you prefer a morning that does not begin before breakfast, Fox does. Both operators ask you to arrive before the departure time, so work backwards from the check-in time and not from the flight.

Franz Josef glacier is steeper than Fox glacier so some see it as more dramatic.
Before you choose
Both operators depend on the weather and both refund a weather cancellation. Fox Glacier Guiding makes its final weather decision for each trip 10 minutes before departure and arranges a full refund or a change to another departure if it cancels.7 Franz Josef Glacier Guides need a four-hour window of clear weather and refund all trips cancelled due to weather.21,8 The wording differs, and the outcome for you is the same: if the operator grounds the trip, you are not charged for it.
A fallback differs. Franz Josef Glacier Guides offer a reschedule, a refund subject to a booking agent's terms and, where possible, an alternative such as the Glacier Landing if their heli hike is cancelled.33 The Fox operator describes a refund or a change of departure and does not mention a landing alternative on the pages we read, so ask when you book what is offered if the morning is grounded.7
With 21 to 24 km between the villages, it is tempting to think a cancelled morning at one glacier means a flight at the other.13,14 Each operator makes its own call, and you hold a booking with only one, so do not count on an easy swap. The better plan is the usual one: book your first day in the village, leave a spare day, and read the cancellation line of the listing you book from.31,38 A little slack costs a night, and it is the cheapest insurance on the page.
Prices are from prices taken from listings. Our Viator listing for the Fox heli hike starts from $501 with 604 reviews, and a GetYourGuide listing for a Fox heli hike of the same length starts from $467 with 359 reviews. A GetYourGuide listing for the Franz Josef heli hike starts from $528 with 391 reviews and a duration label of 4 to 8 hours. Platforms differ, listings differ and from prices move, so the numbers are a guide to the order and not a bill.
So the cheapest of those three starts at the Fox glacier on the GetYourGuide listing, and the dearest at Franz Josef, with our Viator listing in between. These are from prices, which move with date and group size, and the listings differ in platform and terms, so use them to rank, not to budget to the dollar. When you have picked a glacier, open the listing for that date and compare the final figure and the cancellation terms before you pay.
A simple rule decides most cases. Pick the village where you are sleeping, since both give a similar day, and then read that listing's age, weight and minimum-guest lines. If you are choosing a Fox or Franz Josef glacier heli hike from scratch and want the longer time on the ice, Fox lists up to 3 hours against 2.5 hours.1,2 If you want a steeper glacier and an earlier start, Franz Josef is the one, on the operator's own description.24,17 Either way, the cancellation terms and the weather will matter more on the day than the small differences in hours.
