A Fox Glacier helicopter trip can end in a long walk on the ice, a day of climbing or a quick flight with a snow landing. Here is how time, effort and price differ.

The essentials
People searching for a helicopter tour at Fox Glacier are often shopping for three different things without knowing it. A scenic flight puts you above the ice for a short time and sets you down on snow. A heli hike lands you on the glacier and walks you across it for hours. An ice climbing day adds ropes, axes and tuition to the walk. All three begin with a helicopter, and the aircraft is where the similarity ends.
The operator's own heli hikes show the spread. The Fox Glacier Express lasts up to 2 hours, the Flying Fox up to 4 hours and the Extreme Fox day up to 8 hours, and every one of them flies in and out by helicopter.4,5,6 The ice climbing day uses the same pattern, with a helicopter ride from the base to a remote part of the glacier and a second scenic ride back to the township.7 So the question is never whether to fly, only what to do after the landing.
Our own listing is the middle of that range. It runs 4 hours for a group of up to 11 with a live guide in English, and it is rated 4.8 from 604 reviews. The scenic flights on the other platform run to minutes and not hours, which is the clearest single difference, and the one that drives price, effort and what you take home. Keep that in mind as you read the rest, because every other difference follows from how long you spend on the ground.
Five options side by side
| Option | Length | Effort | From price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Our heli hike | 4 hours | Moderate fitness1 | from $501 |
| Another Fox heli hike | 4 hours | Hiking for 3 hours | from $467 |
| Fox scenic flight | 25 minutes | Wheelchair accessible | from $226 |
| Twin glacier flight | 35 minutes | Wheelchair accessible | from $285 |
| Fox ice climbing | Up to 8 hours2 | Minimum age 132 | No listing here |
Every price is a from price taken from the listing, so the fare depends on date and group, and the ice climbing day has no listing on this page.
A scenic flight is the lightest way onto the glacier, and for some visitors it is exactly the right size of experience. A GetYourGuide listing for a Fox Glacier scenic flight with a snow landing runs 25 minutes, with the itinerary split into parts of 10, 8 and 7 minutes, and the group limited to 6 participants. The listing is marked wheelchair accessible, which is a label the heli hike listings in this comparison do not carry. That single line can settle the choice for a family with a mixed range of abilities.
The operator behind the flights describes its Fox Glacier snow landing flight as 25 minutes that explore the ice falls of the glacier and include a snow landing.8 There are longer versions. The Twin Glacier flight lasts 35 minutes and covers both the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers, and the Fox Glacier to Mount Cook flight also lasts 35 minutes, with the whole length of the Fox Glacier and a view of the west face of Aoraki/Mount Cook.9,11
What a flight offers is a short stop on snow and not hours on foot. You see the glacier from above, with its icefalls and its long tongue between the rock walls, and you step out at the landing.8 Glacier Helicopters say the ice at Fox flows at up to 3 metres per day in places, and from the air you see the result of that movement across a large area at once.12 That wide view is the real gift of a flight, and the reason many visitors add one to a walk on another day.
The walk adds the inside of the glacier. The operator says the flight in reaches a stretch of ice where the glacier's forces are strongest, which often creates ice caves and arches, and that the guide fits crampons and cuts steps for the group to follow.14,16 You touch the ice, you climb the steps, and you see the blue that the air view only suggests. A guide explains what you are looking at, and the group moves together at a pace set by the slowest member.
It also adds hours. The operator's page for its trip of up to 4 hours gives up to 3 hours on the ice, and the GetYourGuide itinerary for a Fox heli hike lists 3 hours of guided hiking, sightseeing and photo stops.1 A scenic flight lists no such time, and its 25 minutes include the flights. That difference in hours is the whole difference in experience, and it is worth deciding in advance which of the two you actually want, before you compare any prices at all.
The price of that extra experience is a plan and a pair of boots. The walk is a moderate-fitness day, with a minimum age of 9 and a weight limit of 116kg, and the operator makes no promise that a particular ice feature will be there when you arrive.1,17,15 If your aim is a photograph from above and a gentle morning, the flight may suit you better than the hike. If your aim is a story about walking on a glacier, only the hike delivers it, and the effort is part of the story.
A short chooser

The step up from the heli hike is the ice climbing day. The operator's Fox it up heli ice climbing introduces ice climbing on Fox Glacier, on the ice walls in the upper part of the glacier, lasts up to 8 hours with up to 7 hours of ice time, and has a minimum age of 13.2 It flies in and out by helicopter, and it needs a very good level of English, because instruction is given only in English.7,21 Neither requirement is a surprise on the day if you read the page before you book, and neither is a reason to avoid the trip if you meet them.
The Extreme Fox All Day Heli Hike sits between the two. Guests might ford crevasses with a rope, be lowered into and climb out of a moulin, climb short ice pitches or abseil down ice walls, depending on the ice and the ability of the group, and it needs good fitness.22,3 If a heli hike sounds too gentle and a climbing day too technical, the Extreme Fox is the middle option on the same operator's list.
Franz Josef has its own climbing day. Franz Josef Glacier Guides list a heli ice climb with up to 5.5 hours on the ice including hiking, climbing and tuition, a guide to guest ratio of 1 guide to 4 guests, and a minimum age of 16.23 That ratio is a useful benchmark when you compare group sizes: the heli hike on our listing takes up to 11 guests. A smaller ratio means more attention from the guide, and a larger group means a lower price, so the number is worth asking about whichever trip you choose.
A ladder of effort
25 minutes
A scenic flight explores the icefalls and includes a snow landing.8
35 minutes
One flight covers both the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers with a landing.9
Up to 2 hours
A heli hike with up to 1 hour on the ice and low physical demands.10,4
Up to 4 hours
Up to 8 hours
Up to 7 hours on the ice, a minimum age of 13 and good fitness for the Extreme Fox.6,2,3
Age and fitness are the quickest way to narrow the choice. The heli hike asks for moderate fitness, no experience and a minimum age of 9, with children aged 9-16 accompanied by an adult.1 The Extreme Fox day and the ice climbing day both set a minimum age of 13, and the Extreme Fox asks for good fitness.6,2,3 If your group spans a wide range of ages, the lowest minimum on the page, 9, is the number that sets the choice for the whole party.18
The flights ask very little. Both the Fox scenic flight and the twin glacier flight are marked wheelchair accessible on their listings, and the Fox flight limits its group to 6 participants. If a family includes a grandparent or someone who cannot manage uneven ground, a flight is the one option on this page that is likely to take the whole party onto the glacier together, and that matters more on a family trip than a few extra minutes on the ice.
Weight rules come with the helicopters. Fox Glacier Guiding sets a restriction of 116kg per passenger on every experience that uses a helicopter, and its terms say heavier visitors may face restrictions, including cancellation.17,24 If your party includes someone near that figure, ask the operator and the flight company about the exact rule before you pay, because a limit is a limit whatever you booked and it is better to learn it at home than at the helipad.

The unique setting of Fox Glacier and speed of the ice-flow (up to 3 metres per day in places) make for some of the most dynamic ice formations of any glacier.
Before you pick
Prices are where the options separate most clearly, and they are from prices taken from the listings. Our Viator listing starts from $501, and a GetYourGuide listing for a Fox heli hike of the same 4 hours starts from $467. Both are listed with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. The Fox scenic flight with a snow landing starts from $226, and the twin glacier flight from $285.
Put the numbers beside the time. The hike costs more because it keeps you on the ice for hours, while the flights cost less because they take minutes, and the price per minute is not the point. Read each price as a start, since the final fare depends on the date and the size of your group. A short flight is a way to see the glacier, and a hike is a way to be in it, and you are paying for different things: the first buys a view, and the second buys time on foot with a guide, gear and a group.
The ice climbing and Extreme Fox days are the dearest in time and effort, and we link no listing for them, so we give no from price here. Check the operator's page for the current fare, and read the terms for age, fitness and English before you pay.2,21 A direct booking and a platform booking can carry different cancellation terms, which is another reason to read each page's own line. Compare like with like, meaning the same length, group size and cancellation terms, before you decide which is cheaper.
Choose the flight if time, mobility or money is the limit. It takes minutes, its listing is marked wheelchair accessible, and it still lands on snow. Choose the twin glacier flight if you want both glaciers in one trip and 35 minutes in the air.9 Neither involves a long walk across the ice, so neither needs a long fitness conversation, and both leave most of the day free for something else in the village.
Choose the heli hike if you came to be on the ice and not above it, and if you have a morning to give it. It is the trip our listing sells, with up to 3 hours on the ice, a guide who cuts the steps and ice caves and arches that are possible and never guaranteed.1,16,15 Choose the Extreme Fox or the ice climb if you want ropes, a moulin or a full day, and you are happy to be fit and to follow instructions in English.22,21
Whatever you pick, the weather picks too. Franz Josef Glacier Guides say heavy rain, high winds and low cloud can prevent helicopter operations, so a flight and a hike face the same risk on the same morning.19 Leave a spare day, as the operator suggests when it says to book your first day in Fox Glacier.20 Rebooking is easier when you have a day in hand, and that is true of every option on this page.
