Where the good light comes from
Glacier Country, the regional tourism group, has a photography feature that spells out the timing. For the famous mirror lake it says the best times of day to capture the reflections of the mountains are sunrise and sunset,6 and for the reflection itself it says dawn or dusk is best.1 The water of Lake Matheson is dark brown, which creates the ideal reflective surface on a calm day.7
For West Coast sunsets the same feature says autumn through winter to early spring is usually best, because the light is softer than at the height of summer and the sun sets earlier, so you do not have to stay up too late.2 If you are asking what time is sunset in Fox Glacier, the month tool above gives the minute for any month. Winter also brings calm, settled weather that is perfect for reflections in lakes and rivers.8
Day length decides how much of this you can fit in. At mid-June the sun is above the horizon for 9 hours, and at mid-December for 15.4 hours.9,9 Those figures come from NOAA records at Hokitika Aerodrome, a coastal airport 114 km from the glacier, so use them only as a guide to how the day length swings between seasons.9 In midwinter you can see sunrise, the ice and sunset in one easy day.

Lake Matheson, Gillespies Beach and the viewpoints
Lake Matheson is the headline stop. The first section of the walk, up to the Jetty Viewpoint, is 40 minutes return and suitable for assisted wheelchairs,10 so a dawn shoot does not need a long hike. Glacier Country also suggests breakfast at the Matheson Cafe once the light has gone flat, which makes a neat plan for an early start before a morning flight.6
For a sunset with a sea horizon, Glacier Country points to Gillespies Beach near Fox Glacier for mountains-to-sea sunset options.16 The beach is a 21 km drive on a narrow, unsealed road, so allow time to get back to the village by dark.17 Fox Glacier sunset pictures from the beach add a seascape to the usual mountain-and-lake frame. In winter up to 1500 seals gather at the beach, with smaller numbers in summer, which gives a foreground to the low light.18
A quicker option is the Te Kopikopiko o te Waka viewpoint, a Tohu Whenua site with panoramic views of the Southern Alps and a great vantage for Fox Glacier.19 It suits a stop on the way in or out of the village, when the light is right and you do not want a walk. Together these places give you three different Fox Glacier photos without leaving the road.
Blue ice from the helicopter
Glacier Country says the best way to capture the grandeur of the region is from the air, and that a guided heli-hike to photograph the blue ice formations of the glaciers is an absolute must-do.3 The operator agrees in its own way: each Flying Fox departure is described as a voyage of exploration with plenty of opportunities to capture incredible photos.14
The landing site shows Victoria Falls, the melt river from the hidden Victoria glacier,25 and ice time is up to 3 hours, weather permitting.13 The operator gives no guarantee that specific ice features will be seen, so shoot what is in front of you rather than hunting for a picture you saw online.26 The ice you photograph this week may not be there next month.
One guest in a group of about 15 noted that photo stops need patience. Group size is up to 11 on the tour of this site, so expect to take turns at the best ice arch. Take a few frames, move aside and let the next person step in, then return for a wider look when the group has moved on.

Cameras, phones and the 3 kg cap
Glacier Country says even a basic cell phone camera can capture epic landscape photographs.22 That is encouraging, because the weight limit is strict: each passenger may carry at most 3 kg of carry-on baggage, and the operator suggests a camera, a snack, a water bottle and an extra layer.4 A body, one zoom and a cloth is a sensible kit; a tripod and a second lens are not.
Portable chargers and spare batteries are on the operator's what-not-to-bring list.27 So charge every battery the night before, carry the phone in an inside pocket and the spare memory card in a zipped one, and use a wrist strap on everything. Fingers get cold on ice, and gloves are supplied by the operator, so try your touchscreen with them on before the flight.29
In its risk disclosure statement the operator also asks guests to give it the right to use photos and videos taken of them during the activity for promotional and social media purposes.30 Read that before you tick the box, and ask at the base if you want to opt out. For your own pictures, stand one step back from the guide, since the ice steps are narrow.

No drones in Glacier Country
Flying a drone at Fox Glacier is illegal because it is inside a National Park, and the operator says a drone will be confiscated and the owner fined NZ$5,000.5 The Department of Conservation states that flying a drone without a permit is strictly prohibited on its south side walkway page.31 Leave the drone at home; the operator lists it under what not to bring.27
Glacier Country adds a second reason: the region is the busiest for helicopter operations in New Zealand, so you are nearly always inside a no-drone zone.32 Helicopters fly the same valleys you would want to film, and a drone is a collision risk for them. The simplest rule is to treat the whole area as closed to drones and use the helicopter windows or the lakeshore for your wide shots.
If you still want aerial views, book a scenic flight, where a professional pilot flies the route and you only press the shutter. The operator's tour for this site is a heli hike, not a flight over the whole range, so the picture you get is of the ice from the inside. A longer lens on the valley track, from hundreds of metres away, also gives a stronger compressed view of the face.20

Rain, cloud and the pictures people skip
The West Coast is New Zealand's wettest region, with mountain rainfall regularly above 10,000 mm a year and low coastal locations typically recording 2,000 mm to 3,000 mm.33 Glacier Country says that afternoon rain clouds over the mountains can provide a dramatic contrast against the blue ice, the green rainforest and the white snow of the peaks.15
Rain also gives you the forest. Regular rainfall makes atmospheric, misty and moody imagery in the rainforest,23 and Glacier Country suggests the Minnehaha or Moraine walks at Fox Glacier on rainy days.24 A short stream walk near the village, a 1.2km loop of 20 minutes, adds glow worms after dark, so a torch and a tripod-free long exposure are enough.34
Glacier Country adds that autumn to early spring is the best time to photograph the night sky, with minimal light pollution.21 If the helicopter is grounded, you still leave with pictures. Check the daily glacier access update, take the valley walk and shoot the face from the viewpoint, and keep a rain cover over the camera until the shower has passed and the colours return.
