Fox Glacier in winter and summer: weather and cancelled flights
Fast answer
Fox Glacier in winter and summer is flyable year round, but the operator decides each trip 10 minutes before departure, so book your first day.

- If it cancelsA cancellation for weather brings a full refund, or a change to another departure if one is free.1
- RainFranz Josef Glacier Guides put annual rainfall in the glacier region at 6-8 metres.2
- Ice temperatureThe operator gives +5 to +15 degrees Celsius in summer and -5 to +10 degrees Celsius in winter.3
- PlanBook your first day in the village, since trips depend on the weather.4
Why the glacier is wet and the flights are fickle
Fox Glacier is a glacier because it rains and snows so much above it. Franz Josef Glacier Guides say that the high annual rainfall of 6-8 metres in the glacier region is what lets these glaciers thrive, and that heavy rain, high winds and low cloud can prevent helicopter operations.2 The same weather that feeds the ice is the weather that keeps helicopters on the ground, which is the first thing to accept before you book.
Fox Glacier Guiding says the West Coast is known for wild and wet weather, and that the temperature can vary between 0 and 25 degrees Celsius.5 It adds that weather and cloud levels can change within minutes, and that this is why weather checks are not made until 10 minutes before departure.5 A grey morning in the village can still turn into a flying morning, and a bright one can close in. That is why the sensible plan is not to read the sky at breakfast but to hold your slot, stay close to the village and let the operator tell you.
None of this makes a heli hike a gamble you cannot win. It makes it a booking that wants a little slack. The operator suggests booking for your first day in Fox Glacier because its experiences are weather dependent, and Franz Josef Glacier Guides give the same advice, adding that a day or two may be needed to find a clear window.4,6 Treat the first morning as a first attempt and the next as a spare, and the whole matter becomes manageable.

Who decides, and when
The decision belongs to the operator and its pilots, not to you and not to the booking platform, and it is taken by people who see the cloud and the ice and not a forecast. Fox Glacier Guiding says it makes its final weather decision for each trip 10 minutes before departure.1 Because the decision comes so late, a forecast you read the night before is only a guide, and the weather at the landing site on the day is what counts.
Franz Josef Glacier Guides describe the same logic from the other side of the valley. They say they need a four-hour window of clear weather to operate their heli hike, and that they monitor weather reports and conditions on the glacier to decide.11 A four-hour window is a long ask on a changeable morning, and it shows why a spell of good weather in the middle of the day does not always mean a flight.
If you can, ask at the desk on the morning of your trip for the operator's view, and keep your phone handy for a message. Watching the sky yourself will not tell you more than the operator knows, and a cancellation is a safety call, not a failure of the booking.1 Our listing's own cancellation line is free cancellation up to 24 hours before for a full refund, and that is the line to read before you pay.
Refund, rebooking or waiting a day
If the operator has to cancel for weather, Fox Glacier Guiding says it arranges a full refund, or a change to a different departure time if you prefer, subject to availability.1 Franz Josef Glacier Guides offer a reschedule to the next available date and time, a refund subject to the terms of a booking agent and, where possible, an alternative such as the Glacier Landing.15 Both say weather cancellations are refunded.1,16
Which of those you get depends on where you booked. Our listing is on Viator with free cancellation up to 24 hours before for a full refund, and a GetYourGuide listing for a Fox heli hike of the same length carries the same 24-hour line. If you booked direct, the operator's terms charge no fee for a cancellation at least 24 hours before the reporting time or for any cancellation it makes, and 100% of the cost for a later one.17
Changes take a little organising. The operator takes changes and cancellations by phone, by email or through an online portal, and the portal works only more than 24 hours before the trip.7 So if the forecast is bad the evening before, call or write that evening, and keep the booking reference where you can find it. Ask early in the busy months, since Franz Josef Glacier Guides say spaces are limited and popular departures sell out, and December to February is their peak.6

If I only have one day in the village
Book the first morning
The operator suggests booking for your first day because trips depend on the weather.4
If I hate being cold
December to February
The operator gives +5 to +15 degrees Celsius on the ice in summer.3
If I want the quietest ice
Winter
Franz Josef Glacier Guides call winter quieter and more intimate on the ice.14
If I am driving a tight loop
Add a buffer day
A cancelled morning needs a second try, and the operator says the final call is made 10 minutes before departure.1
If I cannot decide between slots
Take the earlier one
The operator runs 8:50am and 11:50am departures, so the first slot leaves the second as a fallback.8
Leaving a buffer day
The best weather plan is a spare day. The operator suggests booking for your first day in Fox Glacier, so that a cancelled first morning leaves you the next one, and Franz Josef Glacier Guides name December to February as their peak season.4,6 If your itinerary reaches the village the afternoon before and leaves two days after, you have two chances at a clear morning for the price of one night.
Do the sums on the road trip as a whole. Fox Glacier is about 6 hours by road from Christchurch, 5 hours from Queenstown, 3.5 hours from Wanaka, 2.5 hours from Greymouth and 30 minutes from Franz Josef, so the glacier is a long way from the next stop on most routes, and a lost morning is expensive to recover.18 Put the heli hike early in the stay and the flexible things, such as walks and a lake, behind it.
Weather is not the only reason a trip may not run. The operator says all its trips need 3 people to go ahead and tries to place smaller groups on a trip with others, and Franz Josef Glacier Guides generally need a minimum of 4 guests.22,23 A quiet winter departure may therefore be merged with another or moved, and asking the operator a day ahead is cheap insurance. Check your email and your phone on the evening before, and keep the operator's number with your booking reference.

Fox Glacier in winter
Winter is a real season for heli hikes. The operator's page for its trip of up to 4 hours lists departures year round, and Franz Josef Glacier Guides say winter delivers dramatic alpine scenery and a quieter, more intimate experience on the ice.8,14 Nothing about the ice disappears in winter, because the snow that falls on the névé keeps the glacier fed all year.24 What changes is the clothing you need, the light on the ice and the number of people sharing it with you.
It is cold on the ice. The operator says temperatures on the ice generally run from -5 to +10 degrees Celsius in winter, and Franz Josef Glacier Guides say that from April to November the ice can be eight to ten degrees cooler than their township, with wind chill making it feel colder still.3,13 The nearest NOAA station, on the coast at Hokitika Aerodrome 114 km away, shows July with an average daily high of 11.7 °C and a low of 2.8 °C, which tells you the region's pattern but not the glacier's own air.12 Treat the number as a hint that a coat is needed, then trust the operator's own ice figures for the clothes you pack.
The days are short too. At Hokitika the sun is above the horizon for 9 hours at mid-June and 9.2 hours at mid-July.12,12 That leaves less margin for a delayed morning departure, and it is another reason to take the earlier slot and to dress for a cold, bright day, with a hat, gloves and sunglasses in your pockets before you reach the desk. Bring your own warm layers and a hat, and expect a quieter glacier than in the peak months.14,6

Fox Glacier in summer
Summer brings longer days and warmer temperatures, according to Franz Josef Glacier Guides, and the operator gives +5 to +15 degrees Celsius on the ice in that season.14,3 At Hokitika the average daily high is 21.2 °C in January and the sun is above the horizon for 15.1 hours at mid-month, which lengthens the window for an afternoon slot.12 A longer day is useful if a morning departure is moved, because the later slot can still fly in good light.
Summer is also the busy season. Franz Josef Glacier Guides name December to February as their peak, and the sensible reading is that more people chase the same clear mornings.6 Warm days are not a promise of flying days, since the operator says weather and cloud levels can change within minutes in any month.5 A hot village can sit under cloud on the ice, and a sudden shower can close the window for the morning even in January. The operator supplies a waterproof jacket and overtrousers, so bring warm layers to wear beneath them.25
On the ice itself, summer means fewer layers and more sun. The operator lists sunglasses and sun protection as essential, and asks for 3-4 layers of warm upper body clothing whatever the season.9 A fleece you can tie round your waist is more useful than a heavy coat that you cannot take off. Guests in the reviews on file say that in summer a merino layer and one thicker layer was enough, and that the jacket they were given was not insulated.
When the weather turns on the ice, and what to do on a grounded day
Sometimes the weather changes while a group is on the ice. Fox Glacier Guiding says that on rare occasions it cannot get a helicopter to a group already there, that it then looks for a safe break, and that it keeps tents, sleeping bags, roll mats and food on the glacier, with guides trained to set up a camp for the night.10 The operator tells you to bring medication that you might need overnight for exactly this reason.9 It is rare, and the operator describes it as such, but the plan is there so that nobody is surprised by it.
On a grounded day, the village has options that do not depend on the helicopters. The operator's rainy-day page describes the Lake Matheson circuit as a track through native rainforest of approximately one hour, and the Minnehaha Walk as a 1.2km loop of 20 minutes along a stream.19,20 The glacier viewpoint walk is another option, although the Department of Conservation says that track can be closed by rock falls or flooded rivers.21
The glacier will still be there tomorrow, and so will the booking. If your slot is cancelled, take the refund or the change, go for a walk, and look at the forecast again that evening. The operator says the ice is present all year, even though specific ice features cannot be guaranteed, so the second morning is as good a reason to go as the first.24 A grounded day costs you a morning, and a well-planned trip has room for one.
